Cancer Patient Educational Materials for Asian American Populations

Cancer 101:  Cancer Overview

A series of educational tutorials (PowerPoint slideshows) about cancer produced by
the Asian American Network for Cancer Awareness, Research and Training. The English
version has been translated into Khmer as part of AANCART's educational emphasis.

Breast and Lung Cancer:

EthnoMed received grant funding from the National Cancer Institute through the Asian American Network for Cancer Research and Training (AANCART) and the National Library of Medicine, to produce patient education tutorials on cancer.  With some additional support from Avon Foundation, the following are web-based tutorials and patient education information adapted for cultural appropriateness.

EthnoMed worked with the Patient Education Institute (PEI) Patient Education Institute (PEI)  to adapt web-based interactive health tutorials about breast and lung cancers for Vietnamese and Cambodian audiences. PEI produces tutorials on hundreds of health topics which can be accessed in English and Spanish on MedlinePlus, (a health information website sponsored by the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health). These interactive tutorials use animated graphics, text and narration to explain medical procedures and conditions in easy-to-read language. The following adapted tutorials have been translated and reviewed by focus groups. The tutorials have text and audio instructions in the target languages, with a feature for viewing English text. For each tutorial, there are printable summaries available in English and the target languages.

Colorectal Cancer

EthnoMed also worked with Healthway Software to develop multimedia education materials about colorectal cancer in Cambodian (Khmer), English and Vietnamese languages. These followed a similar process of translation and review by focus groups of each language. These following tutorials are available in 3 formats: printable PDF handouts, audio (mp3), and movie-style.
