Cross-Cultural Health Care Program

The Cross-Cultural Health Care Program (CCHCP) in Seattle, WA was established in 1992 with a major grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The CCHCP's primary goal is to improve the health care of communities that face linguistic and cultural barriers to receiving health services. The CCHCP develops training programs for health care providers and for medical interpreters, provides a central resource center, and works with underserved communities and with institutions to change policies and procedures that create barriers to care.

"Voices of the Communities" Survey

Health care providers need to hear from ethnic communities about their experience in trying to access health care. Offering culturally appropriate care requires being open to the perceptions, realities, and expectations of a community that may be different from one's own. To address these needs, the CCHCP conducted more than 1,450 in-person interviews in 22 Seattle-area ethnic and immigrant communities. Language, cultural differences and money were cited the most frequently as barriers to gaining access to health care. A survey highlights report is available from the CCHCP.

Profiles of Health Care Needs

The "Voices of the Communities" profiles deepen the discussion by providing information from a specific Seattle-area community. The CCHCP developed these profiles to provide a forum for underserved communities to interact with the health care community. The profiles were written by or in consultation with members of the profiled community. Volume I includes 12 communities. Profiles of other communities are being developed.

These are condensed versions of the profiles. The complete, original profiles are available on request from the CCHCP, (206) 860-0329
